DAN is Near the Finish Line

My first novel, DAN, is nearing the finish line and I'm excited! It's been a long road with a few bumps along the way, but all-in-all, the publishing process has gone well. The cover is complete and I'm now in the final stage of corrections. My computer skills aren't epic so it's a learning curve for me, but the Tate Publishing team is very helpful. Those of you who have beta read this first novel in the Hilldale Series, offered help in editing, listening, answering questions, and just plain brainstormed with me, I want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU! Without you this task would have been much more difficult to complete.

I have not gotten a final release date yet, but as soon as I know, you will know! Excitement is building as the reality of interviews and book signings begin to come forth. It will be fun to meet you "thriller" fans and see what you think of Sheriff Dan and his friends from the small Mid-Missouri town of Hilldale.

With book two in the works (tentative title: GORDIE), new calves being born, hay being harvested, garden produce being processed for winter enjoyment, and learning to manage my MS through diet and exercise, life is hopping! Here's a sneak peek of the cover. Enjoy.

The cover for my upcoming thriller has been designed and the novel is now in the layout stage! A few glitches but otherwise all is going well.

For those of you who follow my author's website, I am going to try to create an events page. I have a speaking engagement June 30th at the Ellen Kennedy Living Center in Dyersville, Iowa. This will be my first event in many years and I am looking forward to sharing my love of writing with the residents who attend.

Also, remember, I have a blog site where I post about our life on the  farm: plumcreeksanctuary.blogspot.com. Come visit!

Editing and Cover Design in Progress

4/30/2014

PictureOne of my favorite thinking places: the top of Aslan's Bluffs along the treasure trail.
I've heard from Tate Publishing and the next steps are in progress. First is the editing of the body of the novel, and secondly is the cover process. It's very exciting and a little intimidating, but forward we march!

I have wonderful family and friends who are helping me with the editing, and I'm so grateful to them for all they're doing, and have already done. Thanks!

I believe the name of the novel will be DAN. Sheriff Dan Halloran is the main character and the story is woven around his struggle to overcome the past so that he can move on with his future, in both his professional as well as private life. Sorrow, anger, joy, and love await Sheriff Dan, and I hope you will enjoy the journey with him.

DAN will be the first novel in the Hilldale series. I felt emotionally connected to the title A CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM, but found I couldn't connect it with images that where in line with the story. When DAN was suggested, I immediately saw the images on the front cover, and it opened up titles for the second and third books in the series.
The second one, now about half complete, features Gordie, the teenager Sheriff Dan rescues in the first book. There's so much more to publishing a book than I ever realized, and the professional staff at Tate Publishing have been patient with my questions, allowing my input at every step. So far, it's been a great experience.

I will be back with more information and share my publishing experience with you as it happens. Stay posted! In the meantime, enjoy adding a chapter to Silverius' story on the interactive writing page. Hope to see  you along the trail!

The Publishing Process Begins!

My first novel, tentatively entitled A CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM, is supposed to start the editing process sometime in April. The publisher has assigned a production manager to our "project". I'm excited, and a wee bit nervous. My goal is to share the publishing process with you, my friends. So, come along with me down this part of the treasure trail, and we'll see what we find along the way.

Unfortunately, I deleted the previous blog. I'm still learning this web page technology, so thank you for not throwing rotten eggs when I mess up! I'll post a "teaser" about the book on a future blog. I'm trying to refine it for the back of the book cover, and when it's finished, I'll post it here for you all to critique! In the meantime, I'll continue blogging about life on the farm, my cooking escapades, gardening, and anything else that crops up along the trail. Hope to see you there. You can also find farm blogs on plumcreeksanctuary.blogspot.com. Thanks for stopping by, and I'd love to hear from you.

Spring has Sprung at Plum Creek        Sanctuary

Spring has sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the birdies is....(author unknown). The first robins have been bobbing along, the grass is beginning to green up, and clean-up has begun at Plum Creek Sanctuary. There's just a wee bit of snow left to melt, but with days reaching fifty degrees, that shouldn't take long. I'm smiling!

Hubby's tried to keep up with the cattle yard clean-up throughout the winter, but now, with the thaw, he's really digging in and moving manure out to the fields. An air of expectancy drifts across the farm as some of the cows grow near to calving, fields are settling, getting prepared for new crops of corn, oats, and alfalfa.

It's time to clean last year's debris from the raised beds and make way for cold crops, like spinach, radishes, and peas.  The rhubarb is peeking out of the soil, and this will be the first year we can harvest it. Hubby is happy about that. I think he's dreaming of my mom's rhubarb pie.

It looks like this year it'll be late May, or early June, before we can set out the starter plants. We'll try heirloom tomatoes, butternut squash (We like it the best for pies and baking alone, or with pork.), green, red, and golden sweet peppers, green beans, onions, celery, and I'm hoping to start an herb bed.

Then there's the flowers! It's so much fun to intersperse a variety of flowers through the veggies, and zinnias, iris, marigolds, purple salvia, and a few different lilies are some of my favorites. For the shady areas there's hostas, impatiens, and this year I'm hoping to try out a few different blooms. I'll keep you posted. Thinking of all those flowers blooming, I'm really smiling!

The treasure trail is waking up and it'll be fun to see how the winter has changed it. It won't be long before the camping area will be ready for use, with the grilling and picnic area cleaned and set up. The swings and lawn chairs will be waiting for us on the hill so we  can watch the sun set over Plum Creek. Let me know how you've survived your winter, and your dreams for your summer. I hope to see you along the trail!

Cabin Fever

l think cabin fever has finally hit Plum Creek Sanctuary--critters and people alike. The calves are rambunctious and the cows are restless to get into the pastures. Hubby is working on hauling manure to the fields and getting the machinery ready for the day when he can start planting corn and oats. I'm looking through seed catalogues, day-dreaming about outdoor cookouts, and hikes along the treasure trail (After a massive winter clean-up!).

Yesterday we sat out by the camping area enjoying the sunshine, watching the now open Plum Creek streaming through the pastures, and know, summer can't be far off. I'm itching to open windows and let the Spring breezes sweep winter from the rooms--how about you?
